Predictions
- Zelenskiy will strongly push back against constitutional court ruling in attempt to demonstrate commitment to anti-corruption progress
- Latest attempt to undermine anti-graft efforts will raise Western backers’ concerns, although government will take steps to ensure financial aid and visa-free regime do not come under threat
- Proposal to disband constitutional court unlikely to garner necessary parliamentary support, meaning less radical suggestions will be considered in coming days
Event
The constitutional court issued a ruling on 28 October weakening the power of the National Agency for Preventing Corruption (NAPC), removing its right to criminalise false declarations of assets made by public figures and scrapping a compulsory asset register used by the body to monitor such practices.
