No detail is too small for the Starbucks design department. Stone feels cold to the touch, so the company usually steers clear of marble counters. Instead, your neighborhood Starbucks probably uses a warmer material like wood. In Italy, however, all the venerable coffee houses have stone bars, so the sparkling new Starbucks Reserve Roastery, which officially opens to the public in Milan September 7 , does too. Marble counters throughout, from an esteemed Calacatta quarry, are gently raised a few degrees with a hidden radiant heating system, explains SVP Creative, Global Design, and Innovation Liz Muller.
Call that an artfully warm welcome.
