Q&A with Ray Gibbs Chief Executive Officer at Haydale Graphene Industries PLC (LON:HAYD)

Haydale Graphene Industries PLC (LON:HAYD) Chief Executive Officer Ray Gibbs caught up with DirectorsTalk for an exclusive interview to discuss what a pre-preg is and its applications, revenues for Haydale and their collaboration with Huntsman Advanced Materials

Q1: It looks like your composite business has been pretty busy, can you explain what a pre-preg is and its applications?

A1: Yes I can, pre-preg is a term for pre-impregnated composite fibres. Often the fibre is taken in form of a weave, you have an epoxy and you create this material that is not cured, it’s kept cool and you therefore then use it in an industrial process to build up a composite material going forward at a later stage, so it’s an immediate step into building up a composite pipe/panel, whatever it is you’re trying to make. The sort of things we’re looking at doing because the carbon fibre is itself pretty brittle, we’re adding graphene into a pre-preg which creates a higher level of toughness, resistance to breaking, and therefore what we’ve got is the ability to put it into non-regulated markets that we’re talking about which is bike frames, we’re talking about making it into hockey sticks, simple things that in the sports industry, oars, rowing. Effectively those are the sort of markets that we’re looking at doing in the short term whilst we also do concentrate on aerospace and other long term opportunities.

Q2: So lightweight but strong?

A2: Yes, very.

Q3: Now you’ve stated that these applications are not heavily regulated, what does this mean in terms of revenues for Haydale?

A3: Obviously at the moment I can’t give you a forecast, it would be wrong of me to do that but these types of things with SHD, the composite business that we’re dealing with, they’ve got a customer base, they can offer this pre-preg to the customers and we’re going to start putting that into the marketplace in a way that says ‘please try this’ and go on from there. So I’m looking at something in terms of revenue streams, they’re going to come on tap in the short term, by that I mean within the next 6-12 months at the latest.

Q4: Now you’re collaboration agreement with Huntsman Advanced Materials appears to be paying off?

A4: Yes, we are super excited about Huntsman. We’ve have taken some of their epoxy resins, the araldite which is well-known to most people that have bonded a mini to the sides of walls and stuff and we’ve added our material and we’ve created things that are capable of being more conductive and thermally more heat-management wise as well. What they said is that they are going to take the next level of development now to go on and put their resins with our carbon material into the sort of extended relationships with their customers on industrial composites, automotive and the aerospace markets for which they are ostensibly market leaders. They’re a massive organisation and they have really taken to what we’ve done with them very well indeed and they are going on to the next stage. Super excited about Huntsman, super excited.
