On the rarest of occasions, I get invited to a press event so expertly crafted, so perfectly off-the-wall that I can shrug off my cloak of reportorial cynicism, overlook the shtick and spectacle, and just enjoy the beauty of the shared and strange experience of which I am a part.
Such was the feeling I had on Friday morning as I stood inside Washington National Cathedral and watched Teddy, the 10-foot-tall Washington Nationals mascot, lay a Lego cornerstone in what will eventually become a miniature, scale model of the cathedral. The model will be made entirely of Legos, 400,000, to be precise. Once completed it will be the size of a minivan.
Whatever marketing genius dreamed this up deserves an immediate raise.
