A conference today will call for an expansion of commercial forestry in Northumberland to capitalise on booming demand for home-grown timber.
The event at Northumbria University is backed by the Confederation of Forest Industries (Confor), which claims that woodland cover in Northumberland is only 8% of land area.
The line of up speakers will look at how forestry can drive a low-carbon economy in the region, with Confor technical director Andrew Heald asking: “Why does Northumberland, with Kielder Forest within its borders, still have tree cover of only 8%? How do we overcome the assumption that we won’t plant trees in large parts of the county, despite growing support for the benefits they provide?
