Millions of secondary school pupils and teachers in England could be required to wear face coverings in the classroom when they return to their lessons under plans being drawn up to try to curb the spread of the new Covid-19 variant.
Officials at the Department for Education (DfE) are considering the move after the Government’s scientific advisers told ministers that enhanced hygiene measures – including making the wearing of facemasks mandatory in schools, workplaces and outdoor spaces – are likely to be necessary to bring the spike in cases caused by the new strain under control.
