Ceres Power’s SteelCell Wins Prestigious ‘Innovative Product of the Year’ at IchemE Global Awards

  • Ceres Power awarded “Innovative Product of the Year” at the IChemE Global Awards 2017
  • Ceres Power’s SteelCellTM selected from eight finalists and the only UK entry to be shortlisted in this category
  • As well as innovation, the award recognises social, commercial, safety and environmental benefit

20 November 2017: Ceres Power Holdings plc (AIM: CWR, or “Ceres”), a world-leading developer of low cost, next generation Fuel Cells, is pleased to announce it has been awarded the “Innovative Product of the Year” award for its SteelCellTM technology platform at the IChemE Global Awards 2017.

The IChemE Global Awards, now in its 23rd year, is recognised as the world’s most prestigious chemical engineering awards ceremony and celebrates excellence, innovation and achievement in the chemical, process and biochemical industries.

Ceres Power was recognised for its innovative solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology that enables highly efficient electrochemical electricity generation from readily available fuels including natural gas, as well as future low carbon fuels such as hydrogen and biogas. The IChemE Awards said the SteelCellTM had ‘the potential to be truly disruptive by offering a cost-effective, robust and scalable solution to increased power demand, whilst significantly reducing carbon emissions at the same time’.

Ceres Power’s SteelCellTM was chosen for this award over eight other shortlisted finalists, including representatives of the biotech, fire safety and recycling industries, and was the only UK product to be shortlisted. Overall, the awards attracted 140 entries from 21 countries around the world.

Mark Selby, Chief Technical Officer of Ceres Power, said:

Ceres Power is excited to be awarded the ‘Innovative Product of the Year Award’ at the IChemE Global Awards this year. The company has achieved dramatic improvements in the performance of its technology over the past five years, tripling both the power output and nearly doubling the electrical efficiency of the SteelCellTM from 35 to 60%, and it is great to have this progress recognised.

Decentralised energy generation offered by Ceres’ SteelCellTM technology, is critical to meeting future energy needs as the centralised grid comes under increasing pressure. Ceres Power is establishing itself as a truly international technology business and we are working with global OEMs including Honda, Nissan and Cummins, to embed the SteelCellTM technology into power systems for homes, businesses, as well as Data Centres and Electric Vehicles.
