Moving home is business – and making the wrong choice can have consequences that you are forced to live with ever single day. To try and help you make the right decision, here are some questions that you should always ask first.
Moving house can be a minefield – even after you’ve found the property of your dreams.
The sheer volume of factors to consider – from keeping an eye on the small print to checking Ofsted ratings for local schools – can make it incredibly difficult to manage, and expensive too.
If you’re buying or just moving into a new home, we’ve teamed up with the money-savers at thrifty blog 10 ways to have more money to reveal the important things to ask, check and do, before you move out – and it could save you thousands.
Property expert at online agent Purplebricks , Nicola Hamilton, added: “You should check broadband speed, at the property, as faster broadband is essential for working at home and will help with future saleability. And don’t forget to have a nose at the condition of the boiler.”
Here are the 13 key questions you should be asking, but many forget to:
1. Check out the area at different times of the day
Most people will book viewings in around their schedules, such as after work or on Saturday afternoons – but these aren’t always the best times for checking out the local area.
Before you put in an offer, visit the town or street a few times and aim for multiple times of the day.
If you can take a car, sit with the windows open and listen, eg on a Friday night, or after school closes. This can alert you to issues, such as if the house backs on to a path that people walk past drunk every weekend.
You may also want to consider travelling to the property by public transport to get a feel for the area – and how well connected it is.
