Ilika plc (LON:IKA) continues to make excellent progress on commercialising its solid-state battery platform, and today announced the launch of Stereax P180, a version of Ilika’s Stereax™ technology designed to operate in hostile environments, including across an extended temperature range from -40°C to +150°C. Incumbent lithium ion technology has both polymer and liquid in its core design, which limit the environment and temperature range where it can operate safely and effectively. Solid-state architecture obviates such limitations, and Stereax P180 is the first platform being made available to the market offering robust extended functionality. Stereax P180 comes at a time when the Industrial Internet of Things (‘IIoT’) is exploding, intensifying the market pull for battery technology stable in more extreme environments. Accenture forecast IIoT will boost global GDP by $15T by 2030. As well as the IIoT, Stereax P180 offers stable battery solutions in growth applications in the automotive, aerospace and infrastructure markets.
* World’s first battery platform designed for hostile environments including full operation at extreme temperatures from -40°C to +150°C. Stereax P180 is the first battery platform to come to the market capable of stable operation in extreme temperature and environmental conditions. Solid-state battery architecture replaces the polymer-soaked liquid electrolytes in incumbent lithium ion technology with a thin, solid, ceramic layer, which improves battery stability and robustness. Stereax 180 leverages this inherent technological superiority to open new applications, for which there is growing market pull.
* Rapid growth Industrial Internet of Things (‘IIoT’) requires batteries that can function in hostile environments. IndustryARC forecast a 21% CAGR for the global IIoT market from 2016 through 2021. For effective industrial connectivity across the IIoT, small ’fit and forget’ data transfer beacons are required that cut cost and complexity through extended life operation and removal of cabling requirements etc. The beacons often need to function in extreme temperature and environmental conditions, fit in hard to reach spaces and be compatible with retrofit. Stereax P180 is a power solution that meets these requirements.
* Stereax P180 has applications in IIOT, automotive, aerospace and infrastructure markets. For much the same reason as in the IIoT, there is a market pull for similar battery power solutions in automotive design, aerospace design and smart infrastructure design. In all of these markets, the combination of a Stereax P180 battery with a small heat or solar PV energy harvesting device, depending on the specific application, creates the feasibility of a totally self-sustaining beacon or sensor for the life-time of the host technology.
